Re:Verse passage – Exodus 2:8-11 (day six)

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

This wonderful command takes into account two human frailties, our ability to only do one thing at a time (as compared to God), and the fractured nature of our minds. The aim of God’s prescribed rest is joy; joy in God, family, and the fruit of our labor. During a week of labor it is hard to slow down long enough to enjoy anything, much less focus or rest. So God says, “Rest…take time to enjoy me and one another, and whether a lot or little enjoy the fruit of your hard work.”

Jesus got so bent out of shape with the Pharisees because they completely sucked any joy or rest to be had in the Sabath. It became more work. So, remember God commands us slow down to enjoy what he has done.

Don’t take the joy out of your rest!

  1. This commandment and all that is said in the Old Testament concerning its observance (forever) is the primary reason for the rift between me and my wife. She has hunkered down to declare our church, all Protestant churches and of course, the Catholic church, as apostate, infiltrated by Satan. She is certain we are to be observing Saturday Sabbath and all the Jewish festivals, declaring there is nothing in the Bible that indicates “we are off the hook!”
Me? I keep looking at Galatians 4:9-11, Colossians 2:15-18 and Hebrews 4:8-11, where the ritual practice of rest (Sabbath) is a shadow, another reminder of our final rest (Sabbath) in Christ. It’s in Christ where we experience real Sabbath (rest) and not a day of the week. The one day a week of rest is still very important as Jesus stated: Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath: meaning of course that we all need a day of rest each week. There just isn’t that all important, “enforceable with the death penalty” requirement of us anymore while in Christ.
