Re:Verse passage – Exodus 20:8-11 (day one)
Join us as Associate Pastor Aaron Hufty and Associate Pastor Bryan Richardson walk us through Exodus 20:8-11 (the 4th Commandment) in our Summer Sermon Series: “Meant for More. A Study of Commandments.”
God has graced me with the ability to do a lot of things, but the best word He’s given me is: when you (me) say no (to a task), someone else has the opportunity to be blessed by saying yes. Therein I have discovered an ability to rejoice in others’ successes and, consequently, find joy and rest. (Of course, my challenge now is to be sure I say yes to the right things!)
Five year ago when my mother fell ill after her 2nd husband (my sweetest stepdad & man of God) had passed away very suddenly, my husband & I decided it was time for us both to step away from our fulltime jobs to take care of her. Long story short, she chose NOT to get better, instead lingered 2 months in rehab, hospital, back to rehab then back to hospital where she basically decided if she couldn’t live with my dad (who had passed away in 1985 at a very young age of 57) or now my stepdad (dead at age 96), she wasn’t prepared to go on with her own single life. She died 2 months after her brief illness. We spent the next 2 1/2 years settling my brother’s (dead at age 58), my stepdad’s and my mom’s estates & then found ourselves wondering now that we had retired what did God have for us next to pursue. We had left an active role in another church when our two youngest then teens decided they were DONE with church….but last August 2018 as we learned Pastor Don was retiring and the church had hired Pastor Chris to at some point take over as Senior Pastor FBC, we decided to return to the church where we had met in the Singles Dept back in the 80’s, now 36 years ago. Taking a step away & taking time to reflect & rest & regain our strength to face God’s new challenges is where we are today. So this idea of taking time to just STOP…and listen to God..learn from Him..and then once he has pointed either or both of us in the direction He has in His Perfect Plan for us, we once again are
excited to see just where God will use us. And coming back downtown to our ‘home church’ where we started our married life in 1983 has been exciting if not a bit daunting with so many new faces & new opportunites to share Jesus’ love for our neighbors, friends, and those we meet on our occasional trips to Europe & the NE part of the US. I am a FIRM believer that each of us as believers must at some point in our own lives take time to STOP and listen to God…whether we are singles, young parents, older adults now caring for their elderly parents, wives or husbands caring for a sick spouse, or a parent caring for an adult child who may have some form of illness or handicap, or just maturing adults like my husband & myself seeking the Lord’s Will and HIS calling, I’m beginning to understand from this scripture passage that it is so important that we take time to STOP and listen to and then Let God be in control. Thank you Aaron & Bryan for pointing out this scripture stress for taking time for reflection today…just wish I had been in Hawaii too to realize this important message! (Just kidding!)
