The other similarity between this passage and the Easter story was the unwillingness of Darius to follow through on the execution of Daniel. Just as with Herod and Pilate, Darius was told by his subordinates that this man had to die. He looked for loopholes, but in the end capitulated.
I, too, was struck by the fact that Daniel had no Temple, no corporate worship, no ability to offer sacrifice. What he did have was prayer—both scheduled ( Daniel 6:10) and impromptu (Daniel 2:17-18). Prayer was the only “sacrament” available to Daniel…and it was enough.
I see a parallel with the way the authorities “began trying to find a ground of accusation against Daniel in regard to government affairs,” and with the authorities of Jesus’ day when they “began to accuse Him, saying, ‘We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar” in Luke 23.
And then with Daniel, “they could find no ground of accusation…. inasmuch as he was faithful, and no negligence or corruption was to be found in him.” And so with Jesus before Pilate, “I have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you have made against him.”
How glorious is God’s Word to point us to the holiness of Christ our Lord and His sacrifice for us!
