Not Theory. Real Life

Re:Verse passage –Colossians 4:7-18 (day six)

This is not theoretical physics. It’s two plus two; it’s the car payment, or your five dollar latte. It’s real life. That’s one of the things Paul is after when he mentions real people. He wants this small church to know that walking in Jesus is not theory. It is more than the assimilation of spiritual ideas, or philosophical musings. He really intends for his words to intersect into their real lives, at home, work, or the grocery store.

That’s where the rubber meets the road, right? Are Paul’s words, or Jesus’ just theory to us? Do we enjoy taking special time out of each week to muse on these spiritual ideas, only to put them back when we are done? Or are we like Tychichus and Onesimus, or Aristarchus, Dema, Justus or Mark, who by God’s grace walked with Jesus and put on their new selves in real life?

Hoping it’s the latter.

  1. Danny, I agree with you. It’s not about “philosophical musings and assimilation of spiritual ideas”. It’s not about how well-read I am, how much poetry I know, or how much C. S. Lewis I can discuss. It’s not even about how much of the Bible I “know”.

Today, Saturday, November 23, 2019, IT IS ABOUT: an HIV Positive Single Mother of three (3) crying as she was receiving a Child Hunger Fund (CHF) Box of Food. Crying as she was told that she will have Christmas Presents for her kids, and having her two (2) older daughters telling her “It’s ok, Mama.” There’s more, much more! For me, it was about struggling for words, asking the Holy Spirit to speak through me, realizing that I am not believing, trusting, and obeying God enough in my own life struggles. Here I am trying to tell someone that God Loves Them, and has a Wonderful Plan for their Life; as she is telling me that life has “bleeped” all over her. Lord: forgive me, for not believing, trusting, and obeying YOU; I am overwhelmed, help me to see people the way you see them.
