Re:Verse passage – Exodus 20:13 (day one)
Join us as Associate Pastor Aaron Hufty and Associate Pastor Bryan Richardson walk us through Exodus 20:13 (the 6th Commandment) in our Summer Sermon Series: “Meant for More. A Study of Commandments.”
In light of the “kill” or “murder” discussion, how do you reconcile God’s commandment to the Israelites to wipe out certain enemies, including the women and children?
Bryan, your statement “we could go down a slippery slope” seems not to consider our present culture of abortion on demand or gang-initiation violence. I daresay we have gone down that slope and are in grave danger of being swallowed in so much suffering and blood.
I think it may (in part) come down to whether the act of taking another life is allowed by God (just war, defense of another, etc.) or whether it is our self-centered intent to harm.
Great discussion – thanks so much for starting my week with real intellectual stimulation.
Pastor’s:
I understand the translation “murder” from the Hebrew. Some teachings on this infer character assignation, but would this be better addressed in the command not to bear false witness?
