Re:Verse reading–1 Samuel 24 (day two)
“Now, behold, I know that you will surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.” vs. 20
…and the next day David became the King of all Israel. Nope, that’s not how it happened. David’s obedience did not produce the immediate effect that most of us would expect. In fact it would be some time before David ruled over a united Kingdom. David was not in it for his own glory, rather he clearly discerned the timing was in God’s hands. Isn’t that an incredible lesson? If we hear from the Lord, our expectation needs to be that he will see us through on his timing alone. Every moment until then is about preparation for the task. God created the earth and has a total control of the universe. I am sure as the Creator of the earth, He wanted for His plan and His will to work His way and to meet His timing.
We can submit our timetable to God for what we hope for but God will be the one who decides on His timing and for what outcomes. We all are not independent from God. Regardless, we will hear from Him eventually. We just need to be patient and have faith in Him.
God is perfect so He will expect perfection for His plan and His will. David was in God’s succession plan and was chosen as Saul’s successor. Because God is perfect, I am sure, He wanted to ensure a smooth and perfect transition of the leadership role for Israel. His succession plan must be fulfilled and it was to be fullfilled with great success based on His standards.
I feel confident that God’s delayed leadership timing for David was to prepare him for what God had expected of him as leader and to pave the way for David to know Him and His will better. Everything must have a transition to ensure a successful operation. David was given the opportunity to learn about the Kingdom and to strengthen his leadership competencies. God established a model for a succession plan.
As a former strategic, workforce planner and succession planning committee member for senior leadership positions for the US Department of Agriculture, 1993-2001, I can humbly say that God’s model for succession plan was what our team used to prepare potential leaders in USDA. The waiting period was the period for building leadership competencies and for on-the-job training, from learning to practice. God’s succession planning model should be a model for all organizations in my view. Waiting time is a preparation and training time! There is no doubt of God’s good intent!
